Zella Mae (Simmons) Simmons

Mrs. Zella Mae Simmons, 79, of Ocean Isle Beach, NC formerly of Ash, NC passed away on Tuesday the twenty ninth of September in Arbor Landing at Ocean Isle.

Zella Mae was born in Columbus County, NC on the second of October 1940 to the late Vance and Ether Hewett Simmons. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Roger R. Simmons, a daughter, Teresa Simmons, a son, Roger W. Simmons, brothers, Lendon Simmons, James Simmons, Levy Simmons, Ed Babson; sisters, Vada Hewett, Nellie Johnson and Myrlie Babson. She was a longtime member of New Britton Baptist Church and sang in the choir for many years. Zella Mae was a fantastic cook, who enjoyed caring her family and was considered by many to be the “community grandmother”. She loved spending time with her family and friends and enjoyed sewing.

Surviving are a daughter, Sabrina “Sunshine” Blankenship and husband David of Ocean Isle Beach; grandchildren, Shawn Blankenship and wife Amanda, Jordan Blankenship, Matthew Simmons, Tyler Benton; great grandchildren, Madison, Coleman, Zella Blankenship, Bryson Simmons, Waylon Simmons and a host of extended family and friends.

Graveside services will be Monday, October 5, 2020 at two o'clock in the afternoon in the New Britton Baptist Church Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her husband.

The family requests with gratitude that memorials be made in her name to the New Britton Baptist Church “Choir Fund” at 5152 New Britton Loop, Ash, NC 28420.
