Shirley Medlin Tompkins, 83, of Calabash, NC passed away on Tuesday,
February 4, 2025, in the Lower Cape Fear Lifecare, “Brunswick House” following a
time of declining health.
Born in Wilmington, NC on September 1, 1941, Shirley was a daughter of the late
Eldridge Earl and Lena Genovia Williams Medlin. In addition to her parents, she
was preceded in death by her husband, James Trenton Tompkins, a brother,
Donald Lee Medlin, and a grandson, Jonathan Matthew “Matt” Bozeman.
Shirley grew up in Northwest, NC and graduated from Leland High School in
1959. Throughout her life, she was an avid lover of animals, the beach, and her
family. She was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother who was
always willing to help in any way possible. She was grounded in her unwavering
faith and ties with the Episcopal church, in which she grew up. As a young
woman, she worked for Ruth and Vester Beck for 16 years in Calabash, NC,
where she was well known. The remaining 20 plus years of her career were spent
working at ESCOD Industries, where she retired in 1999 to care for her ailing
husband. In her later life, she enjoyed caring for her mother, spending time with
family, loving on her pets, watching the birds, and growing beautiful flowers.
Surviving are children, Sharon Fox (husband Ray), Greg Dixon (of the home),
Christa Tompkins (wife Anita Harrell), Pam Boyd (husband Joey), Rick Tompkins
(wife Diane); siblings, Jimmy Medlin (wife Diane), David Medlin (wife Patricia),
Tylon Medlin (late wife Mary), Sue Gibbons (husband Chuck); aunts, Yvonne
Hamilton and Faye Johnson; grandchildren, Kellie Wilson, Carla White, Christian
Tompkins, Nick Tompkins, Travis Lane Dixon, and Shawnesey Elaine Dixon; 11
great grand-children; and a very special pup named Boo Bear.
A Celebration of life service will be held in Northwest, NC on Saturday, February
15, 2025 at 11AM at All Souls Episcopal Church - 5087 Blue Banks Loop Road
NE, Leland NC 28451. The family will accept visitors in the fellowship hall from
9:30am-10:30am, and a reception will follow the service.
The family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name
to the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick - Lower Cape Fear Lifecare so that we
may help those who helped us.
