Rosa Merzeau passed peacefully on May 15, 2022 at 9:01 am at the age of 95. Celia Rosa Simon was born in Mallorca, Spain, in the year of 1925 or 1926. We are not sure which year is correct. Her birth was not registered until her family returned to Cuba in 1929. Her birthday was always celebrated on October 31 with the year of 1929. She was a beautiful baby with bright eyes and a huge smile. She grew into a beautiful woman who was the life of the party and who loved to laugh and dance. Rosa met her husband, Miguel Merzeau Sr. in 1957 and married Miguel on February 7, 1958. Her son, Miguel de Jesus Merzeau, Jr., was born on January 6, 1959. Her son was the light of her and Miguel’s life. Rosa, Miguel and son migrated from Cuba amidst the Castro regime in May 1967, to the United States of America and settled in West New York, New Jersey. Both Rosa and Miguel immediately found employment and started working toward the American dream. Rosa did anything to earn a living including daycare childcare services, cooking dinners to go, moonlighting in a movie theatre and as well as her full-time job as a salesperson in retail. Within a few years they were able to purchase a home! Sadly, her husband passed away in 1985 from cancer, but Rosa being the determined woman that she was continued to service the local community. She was a member of Las Mujeres Martianas (the Woman for Jose Marti) where she was named Mother of the Year and volunteered much of her time helping the elderly and children. One of her greatest joys was when her granddaughter Eterne Noelle Merzeau was born in 1992. She moved in her son and daughter in law and spent the last two years of her life living with us. Rosa continued to be the life of the party, laughing and dancing until her last day. At the end of life, she was well taken care of and died peacefully in her sleep.
We smile to think she is now enjoying her free spirit again in heaven and has been reunited with her loved ones.
Rosa will be interred with her beloved husband Miguel in the Hudson Cemetery, North Bergen, New Jersey.
