Richard Jay Malin, 73, of Calabash, NC passed away at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Richard was born in Brooklyn, NY but spent much of his life in the Hudson Valley area. He was one of two children born to the late Irving and Zelda Ross Malin. Richard was predeceased by his sister, Lorraine Malin.
Richard had a 25 year career in law enforcement and started his career with the New Paltz Police Department in Ulster County, New York in 1974. He then transferred to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in 1977. In 1984 he was promoted to Supervising Lieutenant with the DEC Environmental Police and was involved with investigating illegal disposing of toxic waste. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman with a passion for enforcing laws that protected nature and creatures. During his career he received many certificates and commendations, including a police instructor certification, exceptional duty awards, and a life saving medal awarded for his service as a New Paltz police officer. After retiring from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in 1997, he returned to college and graduated in 2002 with a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Marist College.
Richard was a member of The Carolina Border Shields, a member of the Masons and before moving to North Carolina, he was President of the Greene County Police Officers Assoc. In Greene County, NY.
Surviving are his wife, Mary-Helen Mulligan-Malin; his children, David Malin of Kingston, NY, Vanessa Murphy and husband Adam of Castleton, NY, Adina Pfrommer and husband Travis of Delmar, NY, Anna Mottl and husband Dan of Statesville, NC; step-children, Dallis Letizia and spouse Careah of Camillus, NY, Jeremiah Letizia of Monsey, NY, Rebecca DePoala of Oneida, NY; fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service is being planned and will be announced in the coming days.
