Nancy Ann Shilling, 91, of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina formally of Homeland California passed away on Monday, May 19, 2025 at her home with her daughter and son-in-law by her side
She was born in Santa Monica California on May 27, 1933 and spent all her formative years in Santa Monica mostly at the beach with close friends whom she stayed close with throughout the rest of her life.
When she was 18 years old she started working at UCLA a job which she dearly loved and in 1963 she moved to El Segundo where she raised her two children. In 1978 she moved back to Santa Monica.
She retired from UCLA in 1984 and in 1994 she moved to Las Vegas to be closer to her daughter Diane and her grandchildren Jennifer and Brett. She spoiled her grandchildren rotten during this time taking them to movies, Port-O-Subs and Taco Bell. She enjoyed her time there met many new friends and loved to play the penny slots.
She ended back in California full-time in 2006. During this period she traveled a lot. She got to be in New York for the birth of two of her Great Grandchildren, Hunter and Bradley and she got to meet one of her last best friends that she had in her life, Carol Bradley, a.k.a.Nonnie.
In 2020 she moved with her daughter Diane and Son-in-law Joe to North Carolina to live out the rest of her life.
She was such a loving person and made everybody laugh with her corny jokes and always leaving her purse in the refrigerator. She loved her family, her children, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, her many lifelong friends, her new friends, her aunts, her cousins, and of course her beloved animals.
She is survived by her son, Stephen Herbold, her daughter Diane Caperton and Son-in-law Joe Caperton, her grand children, Jennifer Miller Pelletier and Jennifer’s husband Erich Pelletier, Brett Miller, Sarah Tanner and her husband Josh Tanner and Lisa Caperton, her great grandchildren, Hunter and Bradley Pelletier and Madison and Jackson Tanner.
We will all miss her dearly but have great memories of her in our hearts and will hold them deeply every day. And now her and her mom Irene, Aunt Marion, Aunt Betty, Aunt Pat, Cousin Joanie and Nonnie can do all the laughing as loud as they would like up in heaven.
A Celebration of Life Service will be announced at a later date.
The family respectfully requests that any donations be made in her name to your local ASPCA Chapter.
