Michael Jay Phelps

Michael Jay “Mike” Phelps, 70, of Southport, NC (BSL) passed away on Monday, January 16, 2023, following a lengthy illness.

Mike was born in DeFuniak Springs, FL on April 26, 1952, to the late Henry Worden Phelps, Jr., and Vernell Floyd Phelps.

Mike was a police officer for many years having worked in the Charlotte NC Police Department, Oak Island, (Long Beach at that time) NC Police Department, and finally in  DeFuniak Springs, FL. After his work as a police officer, Mike and Patsy returned to Oak Island in 1996 and he began his career as a contractor and building inspector in the town of Oak Island.

Surviving are his loving wife of 31 years, Patsy Lummus Phelps; a daughter, Lisa Kennedy (Mark) of Winnabow, NC; three sons, Dane Quick (Sherry) of Southport, NC, Jesse Phelps (Billy Jo) of Banner Elk, NC, Kelly Phelps of Wilmington, NC; a sister, Becky Sizemore (Bill) of Summerville, SC and ten grandchildren, Bladen Quick, Reagan Quick, Regina McDonald, Wyatt Phelps, Savannah Phelps, Corey & Logan Kennedy, Evan Gescat, Olivia Gescat and Laura Phelps.

A private celebration of life will be held in Mike’s memory.
