Marvin Ray Rippe, age 83, passed away on August 27, 2024, at his home in Shallotte, North Carolina, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer. Marv was born on February 14, 1941, on the family farm in Brock, NE to John Henry and Anna Catherine Rippe. He married the love of his life, Lois June Smith, on June 4, 1961.
Marv is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, June, his daughter, Brenda Rippe Bock of Shallotte, NC, his granddaughter Rebecca Nute Tipton (Dylan) and great-grandson, Brendan Tipton, of Bonneau, SC. He was predeceased by his parents; his granddaughter, Brandy Elizabeth Mason; his eldest daughter Cynthia Rippe Nute and his son-in-law, David Nute, sisters Donna Riggins and Lois Riggins.
He worked on the family farm up to and after going to work for Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1968, which then became Union Pacific Railroad, from which he retired in 1991. Marv and June moved from Nebraska to South Carolina in 1995 to be closer to their daughters. After several years in SC, they decided to move back to the Midwest and settled in Ava, MO where they made several loving and lifelong friends. They truly enjoyed their friend groups that met for coffee at the local McDonald’s, Tuesday morning breakfasts at the VFW and Thursday morning breakfasts at the Sale Barn. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2021 with a surprise party thrown by their family and friends.
Marv was an avid sports fan and could be found watching Huskers football on Saturdays and in addition to the Chiefs and Steelers games, any NFL games on Sundays and all the other days during the week. He also enjoyed watching baseball and when they lived in SC, they would often attend Stingrays hockey games.
As Marv’s health declined, they made the decision to move to Shallotte in October 2022, to be close to Brenda, and closer to Rebecca, Dylan and Brendan. While no longer needing a tractor, Marv did get himself a riding lawnmower and a golf cart so he could still cut the grass with ease and drive around the neighborhood to enjoy the sights.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful and caring staff of Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, who made it possible for Marv to fulfill his wish of staying home. He will be remembered for his kindness, dedication to his family and strong work ethic. He touched many lives in his 83 years and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Marv will be cremated and laid to rest in the family cemetery in NE at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.
