Leonard J. Portrey, age 97, of Whitmore Lake, Michigan, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026.
Born on May 24, 1929, in Pontiac, Michigan, Leonard lived a long life defined by dedication to his country, his career, and his family. He honorably served his nation as a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, he dedicated 30 years of hard work to Pontiac Motors, enjoying a well-deserved retirement beginning in 1979.
An avid outdoorsman, Leonard found great joy in hunting, fishing, and tending to his garden.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of many years, Lottie Mae Portrey (Vernier), who passed away on January 28, 2004; his sister, MaryAnn Meek (d. 2020); and his younger brother, Lawrence (d. 1936).
He is survived by his five children: Paul J. Portrey, Clyde M. Portrey, Kim A. Portrey, Dawn M. Portrey, and Sharon L. Portrey-Nastwold; and his sister, Anna Marie Miller. His legacy also lives on through his 15 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and a large circle of extended family and friends.
Arrangements have been entrusted to cremation, with interment to take place at Highland Cemetery on September 26, 2026, at 11:00am. A memorial luncheon in celebration of Leonard's life will be held immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in Leonard's honor.
