Jonathan Wheeler “Jon” Cheers, age 65, of Shallotte, NC passed away on Monday, May 31, 2021 in the Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Jonathan was born in Wilmington, NC on the seventh of September 1955 to Leon Elwood and Phyllis Ormsby Cheers.
From his high school days at East Mecklenburg in Charlotte to his later days in Shallotte, Jon was a lover of music and was proficient in his choice of instruments – the clarinet and saxophone. His high school band was chosen for a trip to Chicago where it gained many honors by participating. He remained in Charlotte for a few years after graduation and then joined his family after they had moved to Shallotte, his father’s hometown. He wasted no time in getting back to his love of music by joining up with the Brunswick County Big Band.
He gained many new friends and decided to try out for the Brunswick Little Theatre. His main focus there turned to acting, so consequently, he played roles in a variety of their presentations. Jon’s aim turned to his career, so after a stint at Gardner Webb College in Boiling Springs, NC, he became involved in retail merchandising. His work took him to several adjoining counties where he met many friends. Throughout his career, his love for the Bible and the Lord Jesus Christ followed him and he loved to share this love with whomever he met.
His favorite pastime was playing Chess with his brother, Jeffrey, and favorite hangout was at Starbucks. With his family, he enjoyed a Sunday evening playing the card game Hearts, but his real joy in life was sharing the story of his love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Surviving are his parents, Elwood and Phyllis Cheers of Shallotte; a brother, Jeffrey Martin Cheers of Shallotte; two sisters, Kathryn C. Farmer and husband Richard of Wilmington, NC, Melissa Kumpel and husband Fred; a nephew Joshua Farmer and wife Kayla and niece, Briannon Farmer all of Knoxville, TN; and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Friday the fourth of June, 2021 in the Calvary Baptist Church with the Reverend Joe Needham officiating. Interment will follow in the LeHue-Chapel Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jesus Cortes, Brad Cheers, Greg Sellers, Barry Cheers, Cary Cheers and Bryan Cheers.
