John Frederick McGrath

John F. McGrath “Jack”, age 87 of Carolina Shores, NC formerly of North Salem, NY passed away on Sunday July 26, 2020 after an extended illness.

Born in White Plains, NY on June 21, 1933, Jack was a son of the late Walter and Elizabeth Dotsch McGrath. In addition to his parents, he was recently preceded in death by his brother, David.

Jack was a proud member of the US Marine Corps and served his beloved country during the Korean War. He and his brother took over the family business, McGrath’s Service Center in White Plains, NY, after their father retired. After Jack’s retirement he worked for the town of North Salem, NY creating, planting and tending to multiple gardens around the town for several years. He received numerous awards and accolades for his flowers and landscaping both at the service station and throughout the town of North Salem.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty four years, Maureen Drohan McGrath of Carolina Shores, NC; a son, Kevin McGrath (Patrice) of Falls Village, CT and a daughter, Ellen Benson (Christopher) of Calabash, NC; grandchildren, Christina Dempsey (Eamon), Brian McGrath (Mollie), Caitlin Targoni (Mario), Stephen Benson and Kerry McGrath; great grandchildren, Madeleine and Declan Dempsey and Rory, Kieran and DeLanie McGrath.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that donations be made in Jack’s name to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice LifeCare Center, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422 or the Alzheimer’s Association at 225 N. Michigan Avenue, Fl 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
