Jimmy Lee Johnson passed away on March 24, 2025, surrounded by family. He was born
on April 23, 1940, in Asheville, NC, to Mildred and Hubert Johnson. He spent most of his schoolage
years in Raleigh and graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1958, where he
served as president of the NaLonal Honor Society and was a member of the Key and Service
Clubs. He received a NROTC scholarship and aPended the University of South Carolina where
he was member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and the Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary Society. He
graduated in 1962 with a B.S. in MathemaLcs. Upon graduaLon, he was commissioned a
Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. Jimmy served in Vietnam and resigned his
commission in 1966 as Captain. He returned to Raleigh and aPended N.C. State University a
graduate student in mathemaLcs. He worked for IBM for 29 years where he was Senior
Program Manager and enjoyed overseas assignments in Nice, Paris and Rome.
Jimmy and his wife of 42 years, Shirley, moved to Ocean Isle Beach upon his reLrement.
There Jimmy enjoyed following the NC State Wolfpack and playing golf. He parLcularly enjoyed
his golf groups at the Surf Club in Myrtle Beach and the Thistle in Sunset Beach. Jimmy is
survived by his wife, Shirley Johnson; son Ken Johnson; daughter Langdon (Tim) Harris; stepsons
Chris Mangum, Todd (Michelle) Mangum; grandchildren Janie Johnson, Sam Johnson, Alex
Harris, Carter Harris, William Mangum; brother Barry (Linda) Johnson.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
