Mr. Jesse George Bennett aka “Papa Smurf”, age 93, of Calabash, NC passed away on Sunday the twenty fifth of July 2021 in the Lower Cape Fear Life Care “Brunswick House” Bolivia, NC.
Born in Brunswick County, NC on the fifth of August 1927, Jesse was a son of the late George Martin and Viola Bennett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of twenty seven years, Doris Lucille Reaves Bennett in September of 1984, a sister, Juanita B. Bellamy and a brother, Henry Franklin Bennett.
Jesse was retired from the Brunswick County School System and was a lifelong farmer who also loved to garden and was an avid bass fisherman. He was a longtime member of Beulah Baptist Church, Calabash. He was a simple man who loved things in life like eating a good meal with family, time spent in the garden and just being productive. Some will fondly remember him saying “God help the world”, "You're as welcome as flowers in May" or “Great Balls of Cornbread” when the situation called for it… He was also a US Army veteran.
Surviving are a son, Larry Gene Anderson and wife Linda; two daughters, Barbara Gail B. Watts and husband George Ernest Powers; Marilyn Denise Bennett; grandchildren, April Michelle Spivey and husband Benjamin Randall Spivey, Scott Anderson, Nicholas Anderson and one great grandchild, James Randall Spivey.
To honor his wishes, a private burial service will take place beside his wife in the Manley Bennett Cemetery.
