James Calven "Googie" Simmons, 84, of Ash, NC passed away at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Brunswick County on August 28, 1939, “Googie” as he was affectionately known, was a son of the late Henry Lee and Elizabeth Iman Simmons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jeannette Butler Simmons in 2008, a brother Horace Simmons and sister Betty Smith. He was a retired heavy equipment operator, a longtime member and former deacon of Ash Freewill Gospel Church now known as Saving Grace Full Gospel Church. James was a veteran of the NC Army National Guard and enjoyed playing pool with his friends.
Surviving are his children, Becky A. Sellers and husband Pete of Ash, NC, Benjamin “Ben” Simmons and wife Jennifer of Florence, SC; and four grandchildren, Cayman Sellers, Leann Sellers, Jordan Simmons, Faith Simmons and many nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to name here.
A time of visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service at the Grace Full Gospel Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 4, 2023 in the Saving Grace Full Gospel Church. Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery.
