George Balbach Obituary

George Ernest Balbach, 90, of Carolina Shores, NC passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at his home with family by his side.

Born in Manhattan, New York, on September 1, 1933, George was raised in Elmsford, NY and was the only child of the late George and Anna Dreschler Balbach. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his wife, Gail Harding Balbach.

He graduated from Pleasantville High School.  In 1959 he graduated from Lehigh University where he earned his BS degree in civil engineering. George spent his entire professional career working for the Pennsylvania department of transportation in Harrisburg, PA.  When he wasn’t working, he was spending time with his family, fishing, coaching sports teams, playing golf, and surveying.  When George retired he spent time gardening and could be found in his workshop building cabinets, fixing wood furniture and making special items for his grandchildren. They will cherish these forever.

We will always remember his pleasant smile, beautiful blue eyes , sense of humor and his wonderful outlook on life. He taught us that if you work hard, you can accomplish anything. He also said that the most beautiful things in life are free, and that things will always work out for the best in the end.  He will be forever missed, but will live in our hearts forever.

Surviving are his four children, Beth Waller (Paul) of Hamilton Square, NJ, Susan Balbach (Ron) of Bedford County, PA, George “Chip” Balbach Jr. (Barri) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Charles “Chuck” Balbach of Surfside Beach, SC; a sister-in-law, Joan Eville (Al); seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Marinos), Mark (Rosemary), Anna (Matthew), Patrick, Richard, Megan, Caitlyn; seven great-grandchildren, Nikolas, Olivia, Adonis, Troy, Isabelle, Patrick, Jr., Ryder, and special friend Evelyn.

To honor his wishes, he will be laid to rest with his wife Gail in a private graveside service in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery, Mechanicsburg, PA.

The family requests with gratitude that donations be made in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, www.stjude.org or to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516, https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/ .
