Edward "Lou" Cardin Obituary

Edward Louis “Lou” Cardin, age 76, of Oak Island, NC passed away on the morning of Friday, February 9, 2024, at his home while surrounded by his loving family.

Louis was born in Gastonia, NC on January 28, 1948, to the late William Burlis Cardin and Nellene Seay Cardin. He is survived by his wife , Vickie Warren Cardin of the home; daughter, Clarissa Relick and husband Brett of Fuquay Varina, NC; son, Adam Cardin and wife Stacy of Wilmington, NC; four grandchildren, Remington Relick of Fuquay Varina, NC,  Ansley Cardin, Colton Cardin and Chase Cardin all of Wilmington, NC; brother, Bill Cardin and wife Linda of Dallas, NC ; sister, Doris Cardin Wampler of Winston-Salem, NC; brother-in-law, Brice Warren and wife Georgia of Gastonia, NC; sister-in-law, Dorothy Warren of Gastonia, many beloved nieces and nephews and close friends John and Phyllis Braswell, Nelsa Cox and Mike and Carolyn Sosebee who through deep friendships became his extended family.

Louis proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. After completing his studies at the University of Maryland and Hamilton College, Louis went to work as a manager for IBM in Charlotte, NC. His Air Force service and work with IBM would take his family to many different places… Texas, Florida, Mississippi, New Jersey, West Virginia and even Turkey. In each place they made lifelong friends. Louis retired from IBM after 30 years and went on to become a consultant for Lenovo, where he worked until retiring again in 2016.

He loved traveling, the outdoors and adventure. After high school graduation, Louis and a friend set off and explored the United States, coming back with stories that would delight all his friends even to this day. He was an ardent golfer, fisherman, hunter and baseball fan. He was equally at home on the golf course as he was on the water fishing or on a tree-stand in the woods.

Always ready to help others, Louis was active in community outreach projects. He was active in Banded Brothers where he was one of the founding members. Louis also enjoyed being a member of the Fuquay Cruisers Car Club where he showed his father’s restored 53 Chevrolet pickup truck at various events and participated in the annual Christmas parade.  American Legion Post 454 became part of his Oak Island life ;whose mission is to ensure local veterans, families, and communities are well-served through outreach programs.

Louis loved spending time with family and friends. Many fun gatherings were spent playing games and cards where he was, more often than not, the gracious winner.

Louis was his families’ warrior and hero who fought so valiantly to beat the metastatic bladder cancer that he was diagnosed with many years ago, after battling several bouts of different cancers. He was tough and through it all he maintained his sharp mind and sense of humor. Louis taught us all to never give up and always showed how much he loved his family and friends.
