Dorothy Wetzold Obituary

A lifelong sports woman and dedicated educator, Dorothy Mae Wetzold, completed her final assignment and passed on February 25, 2024.

Dorothy Mae Wasson was born June 10, 1938 to Warren Anthony and Mildred Dorothy Wasson, the third of four children.  She was known as "Dottie Mae" or “Dot” to family and friends.

Dot graduated from Mepham High School in Bellmore, New York.   A statuesque woman at 6 foot 1 and 3/4 inches, she was elected “Sports Queen” by her classmates.  She went on to earn an athletic scholarship to Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education.

Dorothy met and married William Albert Wetzold on May 15, 1965.  Two children soon followed.

Keeping up with her athletic prowess, Dorothy worked for the New London, CT public schools for 30+ years.  Early in her career she was a PE teacher before completing her master’s degree in therapeutic recreation for the handicap from Central Connecticut State College.

When Dot upgraded to be the adaptive physical education teacher she was required to travel to all the elementary schools in New London, six in total.  She carried in the trunk of her car every conceivable piece of gym equipment she might utilize to make her interactions with her children functional and fun.

She retired from teaching in 1998 and eventually settled in the Grand Strand area of the Carolinas with her longtime partner, Dan Aves.  Dorothy enjoyed traveling, volleyball, racquetball, golfing, shopping, live music, dancing of any kind and followed the UConn Huskies basketball teams both in person and on television.  She loved attending regional and final four tournament opportunities.  Dot spent summers with her granddaughter, Micaiah, enjoying tennis and golf lessons and cleaning up.

A Celebration of Life service is being planned for the spring and will be announced here when finalized.
