Deborah “Debbie” Burge Humphreys, 72, of Oak Island, NC formerly of Clendenin, WV passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 following a brief illness.
Debbie was born in Welch, WV on March 28, 1951, and was a daughter of the late Sheilds Russell and Elaine Frye Burge.
Debbie graduated from Gary High School, Gary, WV in 1969, and then earned her baccalaureate degree in Education from West Virginia University in 1973. She began her teaching career as the director of a special needs pre-school in Morgantown WV. Following a move to Clay County, she taught at H. E. White before accepting a job teaching special education in Kanawha County. She taught at Clendenin Elementary School, Elkview Middle School and Herbert Hoover High School. She served her students with an abundance of love (often “tough” love), compassion, and kindness. Debbie was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Clendenin. She was a loyal and dedicated member of WVAFT as well as being a founding member of both the ORTs and Salty Chicks.
Surviving are her husband, Dana Humphreys; a daughter, Emily Cadle; sons, Zachary Humphreys, Joshua Humphreys and wife Amanda; a brother, William “Bill” Burge and wife Pandora; a sister, Barbara Lustic; three grandchildren, Ryder Woods, Celia Humphreys, Aubrey Humphreys; a very special friend, Becky Thomas and her canine fur-babies, Henry and Holly.
A local celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at 5:00 PM, in the Oak Island Veterans Park, (Corner of Yacht Drive and NE 14th Street). A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 5:00 PM in the First Baptist Church of Clendenin, Clendenin, WV. You are invited to a visitation with the family one hour prior to the service in the church.
