Ronald John Shepard of Supply, NC passed away on January 31st at the age of 72 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in Brockton, MA to the late Leonard J. Shepard and Lena R. (Reardon) Shepard, Ron grew up in East Bridgewater and was active in sports and school activities. Ron is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Joyce (Brown) Shepard, son Chris and wife Dr. Courtney Shepard, daughter Laurie Baltimore and husband Daniel, daughter Melanie Shepard, and his sister Patricia Pratt. "Papa Shep" was also the proud grandfather of Luther Shepard and Adam, John, and Noah Baltimore.

Ron graduated from UMass Amherst. He was a physical education instructor in the Brockton schools, and coached junior high soccer. He was an enthusiastic advocate of sports and encouraged many students in their pursuit of athletics.

Ron and Joyce lived in Wareham, MA for 30 years where they raised their three children. He was active in the community, coaching youth basketball and soccer. Upon retirement they moved to the North Carolina coast where they enjoyed beach walks and outdoor projects.

Ron will be remembered for his passion for canoe racing which began in 1975. Through the years he competed in elite races such as the 70-mile General Clinton Canoe Regatta in Cooperstown, NY and the Michigan AuSable Marathon. Some of his fondest paddling memories include racing in the Hawaiian outrigger races from Molokai to Oahu and the dragon boat races in Thailand.

Ron was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame football. It could be said that he could name many of the outstanding players through the years. Their team slogan is, "Play Like a Champion Today," and he lived his life like a champion.

His passing is a great loss.
