Roberta ( Bobbie Sue) Von Bargen, a cherished wife, devoted mother, beloved grandmother, great-grandmother, and loyal friend, went to be with Jesus peacefully on August 13th, 2026, at the age of 87. Her final moments were graced with dignity and love in the comfort of her home, under the compassionate care of Lower Cape Fear Hospice. Born on June 14th, 1939, to Edward and Lillie Meldick, Roberta was a beacon of kindness and warmth, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication to her family and community.

Roberta was the loving daughter of the late Viola and Walter Ater. She was predeceased by her parents, her twin brother Robert, sisters Shirley and Karen, her brother Kaye. Despite these profound losses, Roberta’s life was filled with joy and love, which she shared abundantly with those around her.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Bruce Von Bargen, who was by her side through every season of life. Together, they built a beautiful family, which includes their children Geoff, Janelle, and Jennifer (Moore) along with her husband Tony. Roberta’s legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren: Matthew (Elaine) Moore, Megan Moore, Alex Kelch, Paxton Von Bargen, Bryce, Evan and Owen Robinson. Her love further extends to her five great-grandchildren: Bryson, Jase, Kyla Ann, Dana, and Dash.

Roberta shared a special bond with her sisters Patty Cross, Eileen Hatfield, and Rosemary DeBartelo, as well as her brother and sister-in-law, Lester and Cathy Von Bargen, and Floyd Head. Her life was enriched by the love of many nieces, nephews.

A graduate of Bloomingburg High School, Roberta pursued her passion for education at The Ohio State University, earning a BS degree in Special Education. She was dedicated to her work first as a Home-Based Specialist, a classroom teacher and later as a Case Manager and Case Manager Director for the Fayette County Board. She served as a substitute teacher for Washington City Schools after her retirement and her commitment to special education continued as she taught special education in a middle school in Delaware’s Christiana School System after her move to Delaware.

Roberta was a woman of deep faith and service, dedicating over fifty years to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (now All Saints), where she taught Sunday school, helped with the youth groups, and sang in the choir. As a fifty-year member of the Herber Chapter of the Eastern Star, she embodied the values of charity and truth.

Her love for life was evident in her hobbies. An Avid gardener, reader, and seamstress, Roberta found joy in the beauty of creation and creativity. She was known for her love of auctions, her talent for refinishing furniture, and her budding skills as a guitarist, and love of her dachshunds.

Roberta’s family will hold a private funeral service to honor her life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the outreach programs she cared for deeply at: St. James the Fisherman Episcopal church, All Saints Church Outreach, or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

In special message, her family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers who provided tender support during her final days: Kathy, Jamie, Courtney, Darcy, Chaplain Elizabeth, Walter, Nancy, Chris, Fr. Farrell, Fr. Warren, and the Sunshine Company.

Roberta’s life was a testament to love, kindness, and service. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her.

A Memorial Mass will take place at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 12, 2026, in the All Saints Episcopal Church in Washington Courthouse, OH. A time of visitation will take place at 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, prior to the Mass. A reception will follow after the service at the church.
