Robert (Bob) Lawrence Hey, age 91, passed away peacefully in Southport, NC on June 10th, 2023. Born in St. Louis, MO, Bob was the son of the Late Arthur and Frances Hey. He is predeceased by his older brother, John Hey, and his grandson, Corey Richmond. He attended the University of Missouri and eventually moved to Connecticut where he worked as a mechanical engineer for The Ferguson Machine Company. Bob made his home in Branford where he met his wife, Dianne (Richmond). Bob and Dianne were married in 1973 and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Bob is survived by his wife, Dianne Hey, his sons, Chester Richmond, Brad (Nancy) Richmond, Scott (Heather) Richmond, and his grandchildren Tyler (Megan) Richmond, Trevor Richmond, Cadence Richmond and Genevieve Richmond. Bob and Dianne lived in Branford, CT spending summers at their beach house in Bethany Beach, DE, and moved to North Carolina upon retirement, where they have lived for the last 20 years. Bob was a man of great faith and a devout member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Branford, CT and St. Philips Episcopal Church in Southport, NC. Bob was known to family and friends for his kind, gentle and generous disposition. He was a patient teacher and mentor to his sons, sharing his vast knowledge and skills; everything from repairing cars to construction. Bob could fix or build just about anything and was always ready to lend a hand while wearing his signature smile. His many interests included Corvette cars, of which he owned nearly every vintage from 1953-1973. His passions included: gardening, hiking, camping, tennis, skiing, golf, motorcycling, water sports and travel. Bob enjoyed spending time with family and adopted the Maryland tradition of indulging in hard crab feasts. He enjoyed taking his family on ski trips to Colorado and Vermont. He took his sons and their families on too many beach vacations to count including Bethany Beach, Hilton Head, Bald Head Island, Jamaica and Punta Cana. Known as "Pop" to his grandchildren, he fully embraced these family vacations and could be found building sandcastles on the beach by day and making Lego condominiums on the floor in the evenings when the kids were small. Bob spent time with his sons windsurfing and sailing his Hobie Cat at Hammonasset Beach in CT, as well Kayaking at the Cove in Bethany Beach, often with a wiggling grandchild in front of him. He continued to canoe and kayak well into his 80's on summer vacations in Maine with his family. Bob and Dianne spent their retirement years traveling and visiting much of the US, including all the national parks. They traveled to many islands and to many other countries including: France, England, Russia, China, Turkey, Greece, Canada, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Hong Kong, Scotland, Switzerland, Holland, Croatia, and Mexico, as well as taking grandchildren on trips to Italy, Ireland, Africa and Belgium. Bob's final journey at age 90 was on a cruise to Tahiti and to his beloved island of Barbados. Bob's kindness, his patience, his love, his sense of adventure, and the sparkle in his eyes will be greatly missed. A celebration of Bob's life will be held in Southport, NC in early fall; date to be determined.
