Obituary

Michiko Maximiek, 91, of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 in the Coastal Pointe Assisted Living & Memory Care Center. Born in Tokyo, Japan on November 9, 1930, Michiko was one of three children born to the late Keijiro and Kaoru Konasaka Deguchi. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Chieko Mikami. Her husband, Michael Maximiek passed away on March 23, 2001.

Surviving are two sons, William and wife Debbie, Joseph and wife Sue all of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; a daughter, Alicia of Ft. Lee, NJ; a brother, Hiroyasu Deguchi, Japan; five granddaughters, Stacie Mitchell, Krista Maximiek, Beth Kukorlo, Erin Fuchs, and Kerri Popper. Also surviving are nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and family in Japan.

After the end of WWII, Michiko met her husband Michael, who was stationed in Japan. During the reconstruction  phase of the country, they married and their three children were born at the Army Hospital in Tokyo, Japan.

In 1955, Michiko and her family moved to Pennsylvania and raised their children in Lopez. She was a talented seamstress and worked at the Weldon Pajama Factory in Dushore for many years. A proud occasion was in 1973 when she received her US citizenship in Scranton. Michiko enjoyed listening to Japanese music and watching old classic movies. The moments with her grandchildren were wonderful times for "Grammy". Her beautiful journey of life has ended, but the memories of her will be treasured.

Many thanks to the compassionate staff at Coastal Pointe and The Community Home Care & Hospice.

Private family memorial services will be announced at a later date. Michiko will be laid to rest beside her husband in the St. Vladimir Orthodox Cemetery, Lopez, PA.
