Laura J. Liggett (aka L. Stoolmiller and L. Pritchard), 84, of Southport, NC, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, at 2:31 PM on Saturday, December 28, 2024, following a decades-long battle with cancer.
Laura was born in Wooster, OH, on July 9, 1940; she was the daughter of the late Paul and Ruth (nee Fetzer) Liggett. In addition to her parents, Laura was preceded in death by her elder brother, David Liggett, and her loving husband, Herbert Pritchard.
Laura was a Registered Nurse; she was also a golfer, decorator, and volunteer. When the misreading of her annual mammogram led to surgery and chemotherapy, Laura became a local healthcare improvement advocate; she successfully lobbied for improved diagnostic equipment in the Southport area, ensuring that other women would not experience what she had. Most significantly, Laura founded a breast cancer support group, which she led for 17 years. Laura was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church (UMC) of Southport, where she served for many years as a Stephen's Minister.
Surviving are a son, Scott (Marisa) Stoolmiller, of Maryland; a daughter, Amy Lott, of North Carolina; a younger brother, Elliott (Carol) Liggett, of Ohio; four grandchildren: Rose (Dan) Broderick, of Illinois; Ellen, of Georgia; Sarah and Mary Grace, both of Maryland; and three great-grandchildren: Owen, Riley and Olive Broderick; three nieces: Arianna Liggett (Ken Mumaw), Alexis (Jonathan) Fedak, and Alecia (Paul) Lenhart, and their children, Isaac, Owen, Amelia and Eli Fedak, and Elliott Lenhart, all of Ohio.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 18, 2024, at Trinity UMC. In keeping with Laura's wishes, inurnment beside her husband, Herb, will follow in the columbarium at Trinity UMC.
