Kenneth Jackson Haney passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at his home in Ash, NC surrounded by his family.  He was 75 years old. He battled congestive heart failure and COPD for as long as he could before going to be with his Lord.

Ken was born in Monroe, NC on October 20, 1947 to the late Thomas Jackson Haney, Sr. and Ruth Hilton Haney. He grew up in Union County, NC, and graduated from Sun Valley High School.

After high school, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill but left in order to join the Army in 1969.  Ken attendeded helicopter flight school at Ft. Rucker, AL but was forced to change rates due to injury.  He served his remaining active duty and four-year reserve enlistment as a supply clerk.  He was very proud of his service during the Vietnam War.

After his active duty enlistment ended, he became a full-time carpenter, working as a sub-contracter.  He soon started Ken Haney Construction Company in Union County, then moved the company to Brunswick County in 1984.  He built many beautiful homes in Brunswick County over the course of his career.

Ken was an outdoorsman.  He was a freshwater and saltwater fisherman, and a bird hunter but he loved deer hunting more than anything, other than his family.  He was a longtime member of Big Neck Hunt Club, where he went by the handle Woodpecker.  He served as Secretary of the club for many years. After he retired from building, he would be found at the hunt club from sun up to sun down during deer season.  He loved deer hunting at Big Neck so much that he purchased land and built a home right next to the club.  He truly enjoyed teaching his daughter, his nephews, his step-children, grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and any other young person he was able to influence about the outdoors, wildlife, and safe and ethical hunting practices.  Ken spent many enjoyable hours over the course of his life in the woods with family members and friends.

Ken loved beach music and spent a lot of nights going shag dancing when he first moved to Brunswick County.  He loved UNC Tarheel basketball, and watched every game that he could.  Carolina Blue was definitely his favorite color.  Ken enjoyed riding motorcycles and 4-wheelers, was an excellent marksman, and a great poker player. He enjoyed playing other games, especially trivia games.  He loved to read  everything from history to Louis L'Amour.  He liked chocolate milkshakes made with chocolate ice cream.  But what Ken enjoyed most was being with his family and friends.

Ken was well-loved and will be deeply missed.  He is survived by Cheri, his beloved soul-mate of 22 years; only child Shannon Haney Landrum and husband Don; his brother, Thomas Jackson Haney, Jr. and wife Beverly; step-children, Steven Faircloth and wife Jennifer; Cliff Faircloth; and Chrissy Line.  Ken was blessed with many grandchildren, they are: Aubrey Landrum; Grant Landrum, Brooklyn Faircloth and wife Hannah, Jade Faircloth, Aiden Faircloth, Vanessa Faircloth, Rilya Faircloth, Melody Faircloth, Carter Faircloth, Jamison Line, Andrew Line, Anthony Line, TJ Ellis, Easton Withrow, and one great-granddaughter, Brinley Fulwood.  He was also blessed with nephews: Jackson Haney, wife Tiffany and great neices Elora and Ellis, Jake Haney and wife Ashley, Jared Haney, and Jaden Haney. He is also survived by the many friends he had at Big Neck Hunt Club, including his best friend, Dale Hewett and wife Beverly.

Funeral services with military honors will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, June 14, 2023 in the Shepherd Assembly Church, 6720 Old Shallotte Road, Ocean Isle Beach, NC  28469 with the Reverend Ronald Long officiating. A time of visitation with the family will be from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 in the Shepherd Assembly Church.
