Obituary

Donald Kenneth (Shim) Souther, 87, of Leland, NC formerly of Northern Virginia passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2022. His daughter was by his side.

Born in Fletcher, NC on the twenty eighth of September 1934, he was the son of the late Cecil Staton Souther and Edith Wolfe Messer. In addition to his parents, "Shim" was preceded in death by his beloved wife of thirty years, Joan Elizabeth Souther who died on the twenty-fourth of September 1988 and a sister, Doris Souther.

He grew up in Fletcher, NC on his grandparent's (James Zebulon and Ella Jay Souther) farm. He attended Fletcher High School and left a few months before graduation to work on the farm. In the 1950s he moved to Virginia. He was a "jack of all trades" and dabbled in used car sales and painting before he began a successful career in rigging and heavy hauling. In September 1958, he married his one true love, Joan.

Following her death, he retired and moved back to Fletcher, NC. He worked for Kings Auto Sales for several years. He moved back to the Northern Virginia area in 2012 to be closer to family. He lived there until moving to Leland, NC in December 2021.

Surviving are his daughter, Candace "Candy" Hugdahl and husband David of Leland, NC; a son, Daniel "Dan" Souther of Bealeton, VA; grandchildren, Amy Blankenship and fiancée John Kinsella of Fredericksburg, VA, Katie Blankenship of Manassas, VA, Elijah (Eli) Souther of Downingtown, PA, Jessica (Jess) Souther, of Boston, MA and a great grandson, Kiernan Kinsella of Fredericksburg, VA.

He loved his family dearly and after the birth of his first grandchild, he affectionately became known as "Pop Pop" to everyone who knew him.

He will be laid to rest beside his loving wife Joan in the National Memorial Park, Falls Church, VA. A public Celebration of Life service will be held at a future date.
