Obituary

Carolyn Dawn (Carpenter) Lewis, 82, of Shallotte, NC, formerly of Webster Springs, WV, peacefully entered her heavenly home to be with our Lord on August 28, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Carolyn was born in her family home on Miller Mountain, Webster Springs, WV, on July 20, 1944. She was the fourth child of the late Ova Maurice and Saradelle Cochran Carpenter and was raised alongside her siblings, Barbara Sue (Bobby), Thomas Maurice (Tom), William Daniel (Bill), and Ronald Reed (Ron) Carpenter.

By trade she was an office manager and draftsman for Tompkins Land Surveying, retiring in 2009 to spend more time with her family and her hobbies. Momma was an avid craftsman and artisan who could fix anything with the tools at hand, even a butter knife. Her home is full of her paintings, crocheted critters, knitted socks and woodworking projects, here to remind us that the simple things in life are the most cherished. She selflessly supported our family in ministry, and waited patiently for the day she herself would lead others in ministry, which she did.

Our Momma’s greatest treasure was her devoted husband of 61 years, Robert Bush (Bobby) Lewis, who passed on to glory in 2023 and her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. One conversation with her was all it took to know that her family and her love for Jesus was all she needed to feel whole. She gave unconditionally of herself and encouraged others to do the same through her words and deeds.

We would like to thank all the people who helped care for her during her “journey,” as she so graciously called her last six years of treatment. The doctors and nurses at the Zimmer Center in Wilmington, the physical therapists, nurses, and aides at Liberty Home Care and Hospice, and our family friends who assisted with her caregiving so selflessly and faithfully. You have all become a part of our family, and our Momma loved each and every one of you.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Cheri Skaggs and husband Greg of Shallotte, NC; Kristi Smith and husband Chris of Shallotte, NC; Suzi Reece and husband Don of Conway, SC; and Ricky Lewis and wife Sue Ann (Sam) of Palm City, FL. Grandchildren Tiffany and Justin Pruitt of Shallotte, NC; Josh and Katherine Skaggs of Youngsville, NC; Jay and Hope Skaggs of Ash, NC; Sara and Cole Carter of Marion, SC; Ally Smith of Wilmington, NC; Lainie Smith of Shallotte, NC; Donnie Reece and Sophie Reece of Conway, SC; Sean and Dani Hodges of Orlando, FL; Samuel and Sabrina Hodges of Palm City, FL; great grandchildren Eli, Rowan, and Aaron Pruitt, Emma and Eli Needham, Braden and Hunter Skaggs, Coen Skaggs, Felix Hodges, and Elio and Cooper Hodges; brother Ron and wife Joy Carpenter, and many nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM, on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Breath of Life Church, 8148 Ocean Highway West, Sunset Beach, NC with Pastor Sam Crane officiating.

You are cordially invited to a time of visitation with the family from 11:00 until 1:00 on Thursday, at the church.

Burial will take place at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 5, 2026, in the Friendship Cemetery, Berlin, West Virginia where she will be laid to rest beside husband Bobby Lewis.

Online condolences are encouraged and may be sent to the family at www.fulwoodfuneralservice.com
